Difference between Training and Education

The words training and education are often used interchangeably by most. However, there is an epitome of differences between the two. Training is an essential asset for employees in a diverse workforce and works environments. Training is imparting individuals with particular skills or knowledge, whereas education is a systematic way of learning a piece of in-depth information, in universities and colleges.  We will talk about the significant difference between training and education in this article.

What is Training?

Inlay man’s terms, training is nothing but learning a new skill or skillset. It is also defined as ‘learning by doing’. A well-planned training program aims at providing and imparting skills and knowledge in specific fields to enhance the productivity and performance of an individual or group of individuals. Training programs are a standard method of improving the skills of employees in companies and is the responsibility of human resource development.

It mainly concentrates on imparting industry-level knowledge to the working employees so that they perform their duties efficiently and effectively to meet the company goals. It helps in maintaining the skills of the employees. However, the training given depends on the position as well as their bond with the company. Usually, training is followed by an assessment that the employees have to take up, to test their knowledge post the training session. They can be of various types:

  • Internship Training
  • Orientation training
  • Job rotation
  • Sensitivity training
  • Laboratory training

What is education?

Education primarily means learning in a classroom or classroom environment to gain systematic knowledge. Although it is not the same as schooling, it means what a person gains while they’re in school or college. Education aims to deliver facts, conceptual knowledge, principles, events, values etc. to their students and is not narrowed down to one topic. It develops reasoning ability, the ability for judgment and much more intellectual aspect in an individual. The key takeaways of education also help in selecting future jobs. Knowledge is necessary for training, but training is not essential for education. The traditional flow of education includes:

  • Higher secondary
  • Undergraduate
  • Postgraduate

Differences between the two

  • Education emphasizes on theoretical aspects of a subject, whereas training concentrates on the practical part of it.
  • Education is learning the entire syllabus provided by the university, whereas training is more personalized and pays attention to your career needs.
  • Education is an ocean of information, while training is about the fish you select from that vast ocean.
  • Training is received only after a systematic educational background and does not apply for vice versa.
  • Education must follow a systematic approach, with examinations and projects while training is a short duration of course, a maximum of 6 to 8 months.
  • The purpose of education is to impart a reasoning and judgement ability, while that of training is for career and company-oriented goals.
  • Education means ‘ Jack of all, master of none’, whereas training allows you to master in key topics of your interest.
