What is Adult Learning Theory and Why Is It Important?

Every corporate trainer has their methods of training individuals, and they’re always on a hunt to improve their ways to reach and help a broader audience. How? The ultimate mantra for it is to understand the client’s mind and pursue in such a way that they grasp every bit of their knowledge. This technique is called Adult Training Theory. It is defined on the premises that adults learn differently than children. It is also called andragogy.

How do Adults learn differently?

It is no brainer that adults have a better set of experience and knowledge in terms of learning. Hence, planning for adults is entirely different when compared to preparing to teach or counsel a child.

  • Adults Require Autonomy: Most adults are reminiscent of the idea of being micro-managed by anyone. Hence eLearning can be a great way to start with, to foster individual thinking and put an end to guide on every step. This is opposite of what is expected of children training. Since they’re new and have no relevant experience, the concept of micro-management is a must in their world.
  • Adults have experience: Unlike children, adults have seen the world, and most of them have experience dealing with the real world. Hence the material and training should entertain and acknowledge their experience.
  • Adults need tailored learning: Children usually have no idea about training or guidance and will not pursue unless asked to. But the same does not imply to adults. They expect something out of each learning and training session, that is either going to help them personally or professionally.
  • Adults need motivation: The concept of motivation arises if you understand what demotivation, which comes with experience, is. Hence, if adults are not motivated by the course or training, they lose interest.

Types of Adult Learning theories

There are four major adult learning theories:

  • Transformational: This theory is based on a paradigm shift. An old experience or theory is seen with a new perspective to help seek answers for all the pain point and questions.
  • Experiential: This theory is based on motivation and the application of new ideas towards a common goal.
  • Self-Directed Learning: As the name suggests, adults are focused on learning what they need and persuing to betterment by evaluating their outcomes.
  • Neuroscience: They’re mostly used by e-learners where course material is is designed based on how the human brain is structured.


Importance of Adult Learning Theory

The way adults learn is entirely different from the learning methods of the children. Adult learning theory, as mentioned above, focuses on the different ways in which an individual mind is accustomed to and tries to motivate the person for their betterment. This could be beneficial in corporate or personal lives. As a famous saying goes ‘Transformed learners transform the world’. In the same way, when people are empowered to better their lives, they can set to transform themselves and the world. By conducting adult learning programs for employees, a company can improve for better and also have an opportunity to reach their goals faster with the utmost motivation and sustainability
